Some thoughts: For an 'unregulated', anything-goes fest, the stats turned out pretty much the same as for most other fests, both in terms of rating distribution, pairing alignment (het/slash/gen) and fic length. So... do fests actually need all the pingely little rules they have? Is fandom not able to self-regulate pretty well? I guess the fact that this wasn't a gift exchange made it easier in that respect, in that there was no need to guarantee a minimum effort so that no one would be disappointed. But given the fanworks made for this fest, no one would have been disappointed with any of them anyway, as far as I can see.
In terms of ratings, you could hardly ask for a more even spread. Exactly half the art was smut, and the other half ... well, not. 40% of the fics were rated R or higher, the rest being rather more tame.
In the gen fics, I included 2 that aren't exactly gen... one was a wanking scene, and the other was actually a multi-pairing fic, but I felt that the emphasis was not on the pairings as much as it was on Dudley himself, so I put it into the gen category. There were a couple of other fics that also announced themselves in their headers as mostly gen, with mentions of Dudley pairings, but those I included in the het or slash categories. Maybe that's inconsistent of me... do with it what you will.
I thought it interesting that there was so much gen in this fest, and that even some of the 'pairing' fics put the pairing in the background. To me, that means there is a lot of fascination with the character of Dudley himself, and not just using him to be one of the two bodies banging each other. The whole premise of this fest necessitates getting into Dudley's character, digging deeper than what we are presented with in canon.
I also found it interesting that of the pairings, all of them were within the same generation. There was no cross gen, either pairing Dudley with an older character or a Next Gen character. Also, all but 2 of the ship fics had him paired with a wizard or witch. It's not exactly surprising, given that there are very few Muggle characters mentioned in canon, but again I think it takes a bit more explaining to pair Dudley with a magical person than with a Muggle.
As I said, there was no minimum fic length, so it is interesting that the spread of word counts looks exactly the same as for fests with a 1000-word minimum. The one fic that was shorter than 1000 words was actually 944 words, so it wouldn't have taken much to bring it up if it had been necessary. The mode (largest bunch of fics) was at 2-3K words, which is actually longer than I would expect for a 1000-word minimum fest. This could also be because of the relatively long creation period, so that people who normally would have written a slightly shorter fic had leisure to expand their story a bit.

Date: 2010-10-21 10:19 pm (UTC)You've done all the work for me (except for the table of contents, which is underway)! Seriously, these were the stats I was starting to compile last night for the stats part of the "thoughts about the fest" post the mods are writing. (In case you couldn't tell, I'm the statistician of the two of us.)
So: if you would like to repost this to
If, on the other hand, you prefer not to post it, do you mind if I copy the stats and link to credit your post?

In other thoughts, I think you're absolutely right that the quality of the submissions here are because the requirement that a canon!arse be redeemed, which required significant character development, and that pairing him with wizards would necessitate explanation.
We did label this an "anything goes" fest, but we also did some quality-control by requiring works to be beta-read (or viewed) and returning some with suggestions for revision due to SPAG or continuity (in fact,
The lack of cross-gen pairings is really interesting, especially since several prompts were cross-gen (Dudley/Hestia, Dudley/Kingsley). Also: there was no cest!fic (well, unless you include
Also, the 944-word fic was an "extra"; it was not a prompt claimed at the beginning, but a bunny that one of our members decided to contribute at the last minute. Her first contribution was 2107, which is within the mode according to your analysis.
Anyway, thanks ever so much for your stats, and for paying attention to a little fest run by two newbie mods!

Date: 2010-10-22 07:57 am (UTC)Regarding the 'anything goes' comment on my part, of course I didn't mean to suggest that anyone could submit any old crap... :p Having something beta-read is sort of a given for anything posted to a fest, imho. I was just talking about the technical requirements, i.e. word count, rating, pairing. Sometimes when a new fest posts its rules, my eyes just cross with the amount of rules and sub-rules and explanations for why they need all the rules and stuff. Usually the admins would say something like 'well, if we didn't regulate everything to this degree, someone would try to post a 250,000-word Dr. Who/Heroes crossover with gender-switching ninjas,' and my point sort of is... I don't think they probably would. ;-) Or if they did, well, vive la difference! :D
I have to say I was also really impressed with how this fest turned out. When I first saw the pimps for it, I was like... Dudley? w/e... But reading through the submissions now, and seeing the caliber of the participants, it ended up being very respectable indeed. :)

That one is still in progress but while emailing the mod to ask for extensions and whatnots, she commented that there were no repeated pairings and I found that very interesting.
Anyways, great job as always with these!

Date: 2010-10-22 07:48 am (UTC)I will probably do samhain_smut if they post a usable master list. What I don't like having to do is trawl through a month's worth of posts assembling my own master lists... but if someone posts a nice list with links and author names, then I'm happy to click down it and gather the particulars. In fact, I find I can't help myself! ;-)
Happy 2011, Gang!
